28.5.2006 Lago di Santa Croce
Located between Cortina D'Ampezzo and Belluno, Lago di Santa Croce is definitely a great option to flee the stress on Lake Garda plus to get steady South winds for windsurfing action. A road trip of 4 hours through the Dolomites brought us down to this unique location...

25.5.: The trip started with the classic nightmare: a huge traffic jam... finally arriving in Alpago (going through Brunico and Cortina) after we got lost several times, it's was already night; time to watch some windsurfing dvd's and wait till the morning to hopefully get some wind...

26.5.: Like the north wind on Lake Garda there can occasionally be some got north winds on a small lake right after Croce, probably 10min away. A local told us though that it has to be COMPLETELY calm on Croce, so we decided to stay and wait for the 'normal' good weather south wind to kick in. Right on time the first gusts arrived at noon but it didn't really get strong enough during the day. Some gusts were ok to play with 6.1.....

27.5.: Slightly frustated from the day before the whole "gang" (cousin mystic mike with sabine and the two flo's) was waiting again all morning to see what's happening, plus getting rid of our hangover from last night. This time though the wind filled in and it was good power for 5.8 all day long, a bit gusty, but real flat water, good to improve your sailing skills... We got again a good local tip, saying the wind might be best if it's hazy in the morning. Time for partayy and see what the final day brings....

28.5.: Starting like the days before with no wind till like 2pm our hope was quite slim to get some windsurfing action before going home cause the sun wasn't really present so far. To everyone's suprise the wind came untypically strong and after like 5min there was the first kite hanging in the trees. Sails flying off the ground and masts breaking on the beach. 4.7 was a good call in these real gusty but strong winds; time to go big!!. After the whole day of sailing it was the right time to pack everything and drive home before the usual traffic jam on Sunday.

It was definetely a good weekend with this lake showing us its potential. May and June with high pressure might be the best time to sail. The average sail is 5.8 with some days smaller or bigger. The only annoying thing is the massive amount of kitesurfers with the majority not able to control what they're doing. A few runs upwind though and you have the lake for your own... A really relaxed atmosphere with no stress at all will let us come back for sure and prefer Lago di Santa Croce over Lake Garda, at least in spring!
